South & South East in Bloom is a charity and independent region of Britain in Bloom with whom we work very closely. We are one of 17 regions of the Britain in Bloom movement and we cover Kent, East & West Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, East & North Dorset and East Wiltshire. Our regional campaign and competition encourages County, District, City, Borough, Town & Parish Councils, Communities, Residents and Businesses to get involved and work together to improve the environment locally and thereby contribute to South & South East in Bloom’s charitable objectives of making places greener & cleaner and a pleasure to live in, work in and visit.
Although Bloom is in the title we are not all about grand floral schemes, bedding plants, hanging baskets and window boxes, nor are we about picture postcard villages.
Our core themes are Horticulture & Gardening, Environmental responsibility and above all Community participation. So we would wish to see a balance between these three core objectives. So an entry with acres of floral displays and limited local participation will do not better than a small community with great community spirit but limited examples of good Gardening. Nor is it about spending large amount of money. We only expect to see what is appropriate for that entry or community. So in a large South Coast resort we would probably expect to see good floral schemes, but equally in a Village we would wish to see how residents and groups are working together to improve the quality of life for all locally.
The campaign runs all year round, in which communities can get involved for as long as they wish. Participants begin in South & South in East in Bloom mostly through participating in local community events and projects and activities that involve local people.
These activities may include group litter picks, bulb planting days and projects with local schools. In addition, local competitions (i.e. best front garden, best shop/pub frontage etc.) might be used to motivate people to participate.
All of the events and activities will then form an integral part of a community’s entry into South & South in East in Bloom in the Britain in Bloom mainstream categories. Communities enter “in Bloom” in the appropriate category based on their confirmed/verifiable electoral roll.
A workshop for the South and South East in Bloom was held on Thursday 17th March 2016 at Crawley, West Sussex.
Members of the BiB Committee attend a workshop organised by South and South East Britain in Bloom on Thursday 17th March at the Barn, Tilgate Park, Crawley, West Sussex. The day covered such information as to “How to get ones best out of your entry”, “How to look after Herbacious Borders and Pruning Roses”. It was an excellent day and most informative.
